Our Inspiration

A group of 13 leading citizens of Bareja constituted a Public Charitable Trust on 13th December, 1984 under the leadership of Shri Manubhai G Patel, leading Chartered Account; and Shri Bhallabhai C Patel, a leading Social Worker. They decided to establish “Bareja General Hospital” and acquired 5 acres of land on Highway as donation from a group of kind hearted donors. Thanks to Shri Dharmendrabhai Vyas and Smt Bhartiben Vyas, our lead donor of MSM Education Campus at Naaz to Blind People’s Association for motivating member of Bareja Hospital Trust to provide the land to Blind People’s Association as donation. Late Shri Arvind N Lalbhai, the President of BPA convened a meeting of Trustees of Bareja Hospital Trust and BPA at the office of Arvind Ltd at Natraj, Ashram Road during June, 1997. That day turned out to a Golden Day in the history of BPA, as Trustees of BHT decided to gift this land unconditionally to BPA for the purpose of establishing an eye hospital and other health care facilities.

Even the Government of Gujarat came forward and granted exemption from the payment of stamp duty on the transfer of this land. While BPA was looking donors for the construction of building, God sent late Shri Arunbhai Doshi who donated US $ 7,000 for the construction of boundary and digging of bore well.  Thanks to Smt Nutanben Wij, who subsequently became District Governor of Lions International District 323 B, convinced Shri Nalinbhai Porecha to donate Rs. 20 lakhs for the construction of building. While a large number of donors came forward to donate various sums of money, donations from 3 donors are noteworthy:

  1. Donation from Shri Vithalbhai Gatorbhai Patel, a resident of Bidaj and a Sales Officer by profession donated Rs. 85 lakhs for naming of Orthopaedic Hospital and Women Health Centre
  2. Shri Vasantiben Patel also a resident of Bidaj, a secondary level teacher has donated Rs. 80 lakhs for naming of Mental Health Department and Annshetra.
  3. Smt Bellaben Patel and Shri Yogeshbhai Patel, originally a resident of Bareja has donated Rs 75 lakhs for naming of 2 Operation Theatres and Bhojanshala.
  4. Sheth Bhagubhai Jamnabhai Charitable Trust has committed a donation of Rs 2 crores for construction of College of Optometry.

There are other numerous donors who belong to area around Bareja who have very generously donated for construction of building, purchase of equipment and conduction of eye screening camps and other health care activities.

As this complex has availed excellent community support and blessings of numerous people who have benefitted from its health care services, it is going to emerge one of the most leading eye care agencies in the State of Gujarat.

To All the Supporters and Well Wishers,

Greetings! I am very happy and pleased with the fantastic growth of the BPA Porecha Eye Hospital which is a part of the BPA Bareja Hospital Complex. What started out as an altruistic idea of preventing needless blindness and serving the poor has now exceeded all our initial ideas and dreams. We have a state of the art hospital which is charitable in nature and totally professional and modern in its management, approach and specialties. Starting out with 500 cataract surgeries annually, we now reach out to 5 districts and operate upon 12000 eyes. From a simple cataract surgery performing hospital, we now have super specialty in retina, glaucoma, pediatric eye care and low vision assessment and rehabilitation. We have been able to reach these heights due to our donors like the Porecha family, Vasantiben Patel, Vithalbhai Patel, CBM, Gruh Finance, Areez Khambatta Benevolent Trust, National Programme for Control of Blindness, Seva Foundation, HelpAge India, LIC, Samta Vikas Charitable Trust, Bella and Yogesh Patel, Jashwantbhai Tuwawala, Dr. Nitin Shah, Heart Foundation and Research Centre and Wagh Bakri Tea. Form being an agency requesting others for training, we are now so placed to offer fellowship program in Phaco and SICS surgery from Indian and international doctors. Last year we trained 22 Doctors!!

We are also running an Orthopedic Hospital and an ENT Hospital, Psychiatric Care, Physiotherapy, Pathology, X- Ray with the aim of reducing disabling conditions. We are regularly conducting eye and general health camps in remote rural areas so that the rural poor and unserved people are reached.

Next year we propose to start an Optometry College and expand our specialties.

Our motto of providing high quality eye care continues and we always strive to reach greater heights. We wish to give back to the community which it has given us so generously. We thank all for reposing their trust in us. The BPA Bareja team deserves kudos for their efforts, dedication and devotion to the cause!!

Looking forward to serving humanity further with your kind help and guidance,
